Spring Fling Weigh In #5

2010 March 31
by Karena

It was with great trepidation that I approached my scale this morning. I am a chronic-weigher, but forced myself to abstain this week. Because I’m experimenting with my *diet* and didn’t want seeing an extra half pound to freak me out and send me running to my entire bookshelf of diet books looking for the next quick fix.

Let me back track a little. Two weeks ago I was feeling peckish, and went to the kitchen looking for something — I didn’t know what. I opened the refrigerator door and rifled through the fruit drawer. Clementines!! So sweet, so juicy! Perfect. Then the Little Voice inside my head rumbled (I’m not the only one that hears voices, right? right??).

LV: That’s pure carbs.
me: Come on, it’s less than 50 calories. And tastes delicious. It’s just what I want.
LV:: It’s nothing but natural (said in a disgusted voice) sugar.
me: It’s fruit. It’s not like I’m eating candy.
LV: You might as well be.
me: But I don’t want candy. I want a clementine.
LV: Choose something with more fiber. Grab an apple.
me: I don’t want a damn apple. I want a clementine.
LV: You’ll be sorry…
me: Shut up and get out of my head!

Yup, I sent the Little Voice packing. It is no longer welcome. That’s the day, ladies and gentlemen, that I first googled “intuitive eating”. And started exploring the concept. Eating what I want, when I want it, and stopping when I’m satisfied. Trust me that it is not as intuitive as you’d think. Certainly not for someone that has spent the majority of her life on a diet.

More on this in the days and weeks to come…

So, back to the scale. I didn’t lose this week. But I didn’t gain, either. Holding steady at 160. And since I’ve been *eating what I want, when I wanted*, I consider that a major accomplishment! Now if only I could tune in to my body better and find the *stop when I’m satisfied* point! It is, and I am, definitely a work in progress!

Dude, first of all congrats!!!! Second of all, Clementines ARE good for you! If you're going to have sugar, the natural kind is the best kind and if you're looking at it at a calorie standpoint, that's a hellofa great snack! All the calorie-counters are doing it!! I can't count the number of times Clementine comes up on Twitter among the health-blog crowd! Serious! anyway, great job this week. Sometimes your body wants something for a reason, and obviously, “stop when I”m satisfied” is a great goal. I'm trying it myself. xo

So glad to be the guinea pig! Much better than being the lab rat! I'm afraid to try it to, but decided the opportunity to develop a healthy relationship with food and the scale was worth facing the fear! Time will tell.

You are a rockstar for sending LV packing. I wish mine would freakin' SHUT UP already. I really hope this plan works for you. It makes so much sense.

I'm with Heather – Now I want a clementine! Great job maintaining… Phenomenal work with your LV – It isn't easy to challenge all of the ingrained thoughts and habits – Good for you to “go deeper”.

I love the idea of intuitive eating, too. I'm watching much less how much I put in my body as WHAT i put in my body. But I”m also still having trouble knowing when to stop, LOL!

Congrats on the maintenance, friend. That's awesome!

So proud of you, Karena. Just think how far you have come since just this past summer! I think I need to check out this intuitive dieting…maybe I won't obsess so much if I follow along with this thinking. How's the injury doing? I haven't had a chance to catch up with anyone this week.
